James Way – Tenor

James WayJames is currently studying at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama where he learns with Susan Waters and is kindly supported by the Guildhall Trust and the Sheila White Bequest. He was a finalist in the 2015 Maureen Lehane Vocal Awards at the Wigmore Hall and a 2013/14 Britten-Pears Young Artist. Recent and future performance highlights include step-out aria solos in J.S Bach St Matthew Passion at the Baluarte (Pamplona), KKL Concert Hall (Lucerne), Bozar Hall (Brussels) and the Gewandhaus (Amsterdam) for Sir John Eliot Gardiner; Vistola Fiume/Pastore La Liberazione di Ruggiero for the Brighton Early Music Festival and his debut with the Philharmonia Orchestra in the role of the Holy Fool Boris Godunov. James will make is BBC Proms debut at this year’s Last Night of the Proms singing as one of the tenor soloists in Vaughan Williams’ Serenade to Music with the BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sakari Oramo.

Other engagements for 2016 include Brahms Liebeslieder and Stephen Hough’s Other Love Songs at the Wigmore Hall, a performance of Julian Philips Cantos de Sohno for tenor, soprano and piano trio for GSMD and a selection of Brahms Lieder and duets as part of the inaugural concert of the Devon Song Festival. James will also cover the role of M. Triquet Eugene Onegin and Trojan Man Idomeneo for Garsington Opera.

Other opera roles include the Ballad Singer Owen Wingrave (Aldeburgh and Edinburgh International Festivals), Ferrando Così fan tutte (excerpts – for Garsington Opera Alvarez Young Artist, the title role in Acis and Galatea (Turl Street Arts Festival), Peter Quint Turn of the Screw (Guildhall School Opera Scenes) and Prunier La Rondine (Oxenfoord International Opera Scenes).

As a soloist on the concert platform, performances include JS Bach B minor Mass, St John Passion, Cantata 127 and Magnificat (St Endellion Festival and Tewkesbury Abbey), Handel Israel in Egypt and Messiah, Mozart C minor Mass and Requiem, Monteverdi Vespers (Dartington Hall), Pergolesi Missa Romana (Southbank Sinfonia/London Handel Festival) and Vaughan Williams Serenade to Music with the CBSO. He was also invited to sing the tenor solo in a new commission for tenor, horn and strings at the Britten Centenary Weekend (2013) in Snape Maltings Concert Hall.

A keen recitalist James has performed in song masterclasses with Malcolm Martineau and Christoph Prégardien and was selected by Graham Johnson to be a member of his Song Guild for a performance of Winterreise at Milton Court. He was recently invited to study with Peter Schreier as part of the Internationale Mendelssohn-Akademie Leipzig sponsored by the UK Mendelssohn Foundation.

James previously studied at King’s College London, where he was a choral scholar and graduated with a first class honours degree in music.
