Claire Barnett-Jones – Mezzo Soprano

Picture of Claire Barnett-JonesBritish Mezzo-Soprano, Claire Barnett-Jones, completed her Bachelor of Music Degree in 2012 at Birmingham Conservatoire, studying under Louise Crane, with coaching from Stephen Barlow, Justin Lavender, Robin Bowman and Jane Robinson. In September, Claire will be continuing her studies at the Royal Academy of Music, studying with Sarah Walker. The Ian Fleming Award administered by the Musicians Benevolent Fund, The Simon Fletcher Charitable Trust, and The William Gibbs Religious and Educational Trust generously support Claire’s studies at the RAM.

Claire’s roles in opera and opera scenes have included Martha (Faust), Calliope (Orpheus and the Underworld), 3rd Witch (Macbeth), Mrs Paskova (The Cunning Little Vixen), Emma Jones (Street Scene), Dorabella (Cosi fan Tutte), Nancy and Florence Pike (Albert Herring), Old Lady (Candide), Bianca (Rape of Lucretia), Zita (Gianni Schicchi) and Sorceress (Dido and Aeneas). She has performed as part of the Gilbert and Sullivan International Opera Company and the Philharmonia Chorus Young Singers Scheme. Claire was also a chorus mentor with Birmingham Opera Company for the world premier of a new opera, Life is a Dream, by Jonathan Dove, directed by Graham Vick and a Consort Member on the EMI Recording of Damon Albarn’s Opera Dr Dee, recently performed at English National Opera.

Claire has sung a wide variety of Concert Repertoire throughout the UK and Europe, including Mozart’s Requiem, Lalande’s Te Deum, Handel’s Messiah and Rossini’s Petite Messe Solenelle.

Recent engagements have included performing as Alto soloist in the World Premier of Stockhausen’s Mittwoch aus Licht with Birmingham Opera Company as part of the Cultural Olympiad. She will be revisiting this role when it is performed at the Royal Albert Hall for the BBC Proms later on this year.

Whilst at Birmingham Conservatoire, Claire won the Gordon Clinton Prize for English Song, the Cecil Drew Prize for Oratorio, Birmingham Conservatoire Singing Prize, the Leamington Spa Music Prize and the Town Hall, Symphony Hall Recital Prize, which includes a solo recital at either Birmingham Town Hall, or Birmingham Symphony Hall. Outside of the Conservatoire she was a finalist in the Dean and Chadlington Inaugural Singing Competition, part of the 2012 Dean and Chadlington Summer Music Festival.
