Vanessa Bowers – Soprano

Vanessa Bowers

Vanessa Bowers grew up in Buckinghamshire and started singing at a very early age. She attended the Junior Royal Academy of Music as a violist and pianist before entering the Royal Academy as a singer, gaining her BMus in Vocal Studies. She received the prize awarded to the fourth year student with the highest BMus vocal final recital mark, The Clifton Memorial Prize. In 2010/2011 she was a member of the English National Opera, Opera Works course and began MA Opera Studies at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama for which she received a Distinction and was a finalist in the Ian Stoutzker Prize 2013.

Vanessa sang her first leading operatic role when she was 20, taking the title role of Semele by Handel for Winterbourne Opera. She has enjoyed a long collaboration with them returning to sing ‘Susanna’ in The Marriage of Figaro and ‘Galatea’ in Acis and Galatea. She most recently sang the role of ‘Tiny’ in the critically acclaimed production of Paul Bunyan with the Welsh National Youth Opera. Whilst at the RWCMD she performed the roles of ‘Barbarina’ in Le Nozze di Figaro and ‘Female Chorus’ in The Rape of Lucretia as well as being invited to perform the role of ‘Frasquita’ in Carmen for the St Magnus Festival, Orkney.

Vanessa has performed in venues across the UK including St Martin–in–the–Fields, St John’s Smith Square, the Royal Albert Hall and York Minster. She made her BBC Proms debut as a soloist in Bernstein MASS with the BBC Orchestra of Wales. Her future plans include singing chorus with Garsington Festival Opera, a concert tour of the UK with the Da Neta Duo and singing the part of ‘Soprano 4’ in Berio’s Coro with the Lucerne Festival Academy and conductor Simon Rattle.
